Pennywise the dancing clown! A large painting

pennywise
initial sketch

Process of a large painting? I've never done anything larger than a 12x16 before this 18x24 pennywise, and even at that, in don't use anything larger than an 8x10 very often. Shown above is the initial sketch outline, I always start with a grid and a sketch done in watercolor pencil so that it blends in with the paint with out effecting it or causing anything weird to happen down the line. Click after the jump to see the rest of the process!

comparison

Above shows the sizes I normally work on versus the large project. The nun is on a 4x6 stretched canvas while Freddy Krueger is on a 5x7. These are the sizes I most often reach for and enjoy painting on. I think it comes to my art and painting skills coming from starting in nail art, so I'm use to painting tiny things. This large size actually turned out to be much more fun than I thought it might be though.

ruffles finished

The ruffles. Oh my god, the ruffles. I simplified them to make it easier and save time, but these still took so long. The riffles alone was two weeks of working on it when I could. Of course this was with high heat and dry conditions, and if you know acrylic paint, you know it dries quickly as it is. It's even worse in hot and/or dry conditions. So there's were a few days I had given up pretty quickly for the day when blending didn't go as I wanted.

Finished

But once the ruffles were done, the rest went quickly!one of those reasons being that we had a weekend with a cool front so I was able to spend more time paintimg without fighting the weather. Another thing? I super duper love pai ting faces and I saved that for last for that reason. It was like a huge reward for making it through the tedious and time consuming ruffles. Majority of the face and balloon was finished in one day, I was just on a roll with it and lost in the details on the face. But now this guy has been sent to live in his new home!
